METAMORPHIC • 50% recycled wool from production waste/50% new merino wool • 400 yards per skein • hand wash, lay flat to dry • MADE IN THE USA

About Metamorphic: Meet our environmentally kind and conscious, zero waste yarn! Why are we so into this yarn? I mean, ok, yes - it’s gorgeous, it’s small-batch, it’s perfect for all kinds of projects...

But hang on, y’all, because that’s just a start. As you look closely at this yarn, you’ll see a whole spectrum of colors, blended together in each unique colorway.

That’s because this yarn is recycled from mill waste generated during the production of Dyed In The Wool, Dream State, Nocturne and Plump!

Throughout several stages of our milling process, the machines shed a little “waste” fiber. These tiny bits can add up quickly for a mill producing yarn seven days a week!

Here at Spincycle Yarns, one of our core values is to minimize waste, and, naturally, that means that we don’t want to throw out the hard work of anyone, from the farmers who grow our wool to our talented staff of dyers and millers. To utilize every ounce of wool we buy, even the “waste” fiber, we partner with our neighbor mill, Skagit Woolen Works. They have the means (aka the big, big machines) to blend fiber more efficiently than we do, so they can thoroughly re-comb the waste fiber. After blending and carding the waste fiber once more, with an equivalent weight of new (previously unmilled) wool, we are able to spin the fiber into something brand new and utterly beautiful.

Okay, now for all the fiber nerds out there, we’re going to get a little bit technical about the process:  We use a minimum of 50% mill waste fiber, blended with new wool, to make this dynamic yarn. Because 50% or more of the wool in a skein of Metamorphic has been through the carding and pin drafting process several times, the staple length of the wool can vary widely. A big part of milling a perfect yarn is to know the staple length and set the spinning machines accordingly. With an inconsistent staple length, a one-size-fits-all setting for the spin frame can be a challenge. As a result, some batches of Metamorphic may look a little different from others. You might notice the ply angle appearing a bit tighter or looser from one batch to another, or you might find some slubs in the yarn, giving it a rustic look. Most idiosyncrasies will be very slightly noticeable in the skein but will all but disappear once knitted up.

Because of the extremely small-batch nature of this yarn, and the unpredictable chaos of the blending process, these lots are truly one of a kind and not reproducible. Be sure to purchase all the yardage you need for your project at once!
