Knitted braids are the perfect embellishment for any project to make it just a little more special. The Baltic countries of Latvia and Estonia have many different styles of braids that have added interesting details to mittens, gloves, socks, and sweaters. Learn three different braid types, two colour braided cast on and experiment with colour combinations and directionality.

Students will learn:

  • Estonian Twisted Braid
  • Kihnu vits / Kihnu Braid
  • Latvian braid: left and right leaning
Handouts and materials will be provided by Aleks. Students will receive an email from us here at Spincycle before the class, providing details about materials, equipment, and preparation work required of each student. The folks at Spincycle Yarns & Supply Co. will be available and delighted to help students gather or purchase supplies!

ABOUT ALEKS BYRD

Aleks Byrd is a knitwear designer with roots in Estonia, Canada, and the USA. She creates modern patterns with a connection to the past using little-known traditional techniques with a fresh twist on them for unique wearable designs that are fun and rewarding to knit for all levels of knitters. In addition to knitwear design, she works as an illustrator and teaches Estonian knitting techniques around the world. Her latest book Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knits brings together her designs and teaching as introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired.

This class is only offered in-person at our Bellingham brick & mortar. Spots are limited, so sign up now!

We know that some folks will want to travel from out of town for both of these workshops. We are more than happy to assist if you need recommendations for lodging or would like to be paired up with another student in a hotel or Airbnb, or if you need help with finding restaurants that work for various dietary needs! Feel free to email us with questions. We love our little town and we know it forwards and backwards!
